Red Bull gives you Air Races

This past weekend was the Red Bull Air Race in slightly cooler Las Vegas NV.

For those who don't know what the Air race is, 12-15 pilots take acrobatic aircraft around a course of pylons. The Race is timed for who ever gets around the pylons the fastest with out hitting them and following the certain rules pertaining to each race course. weekend was hosted at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. the track it self was one of the less complicated ones of the series, a few gates and pylons.

The events of Saturday was qualifiers, which was scheduled to happen 3 hours AFTER we arrived. assuming that since Nellis AFB was not far off, i figured that 'Hey air planes, the Air Force might have something cool to show all the race attendees.' Nope No Air force or anything really flying related besides a few inflated able pictures of the aircraft. not much to do for the dead time besides buy food that could quite possibly be described as worse then a elementary school lunch.

The really fun part of the trip was seeing the qualifiers, each aircraft skillfully maneuvering around  the course and beating the other races by fractions of a second. really exciting stuff!
Race Peter Besenyei and Kirby Chambliss waiting to take off
Sunday was a tad bit more interesting, wind was howling and made the pylons go every which way.
A few racers hit the pylons making them explode.* So the race stops, teams go out to fix the pylons, meanwhile the wind is getting stronger, knocking more pylons over. teams go out to re inflate the fallen pylons. then the ones they fix topple. after 20 minutes of this the race was put on hold. and deciding that it was probably not going to continue we left.

Turns out the race organizers came to the same conclusion ending the race giving it to the Canadian racer Pete McLeod.

The race was Fun to watch. It is much different in real life compared to watching the race on TV.

*The pylons are built to when anything brushes past it it shatters, no airplanes were hurt in the race.

Ocean-front Property in Arizona

Come to Arizona they said, it never rains they said.
A rather large storm came through the valley this morning. Apparently the odds of this storm happening was 0.0002% chance. It was bad enough to have schools closed down and portions of the I-10 in Phoenix get reduced to lakes. Lucky for the SC family the house is dry, our neighbors not as lucky.
So as of now, the neighbor hood is river-front property. And yes i did see people traveling in boats.
brings to mind a certain song

Range Report

Last year the challenge of a 300. Win Mag following my attempt to shoot a 44. magnum.  Me being the person who is going through 'recoil therapy'. So today after doing some mental math (its been close to two months since I have last been to the range. not good!) I asked if we could finally take out the 300. win mag to see just how bad recoil could be.  And for the record Dad has unofficially named it the "Shoulder Crusher". The rifle by my best guesstimate was somewhere around eight to nine pounds. using past experience of the recoil difference of a M1 Garand and M1903, the former being 3 pounds heavy with a semi-auto action compared to the latter with a bolt action, I was worrying for my shoulder. But thankfully it wasn't the case, The recoil was rough but bearable. I cannot get a idea for shooting a few hundred to a thousand rounds of 300. Win Mag without a muzzle break. By the end of the day, my shoulder is still in working order. and now I need to find a Anzio 20mm. Will buy the ammo.

A Inconvenient Waste of time

Yeah, apparently there is no science class in school you can take that does not Involve some form of "OH NOES! GLOBAL WARMINGs GUNNA KEEL US ALL!" case and point, we had to watch "An Inconvenient Truth" as apart of our 'curriculum'. And yes I already know the movie was a waste of time before seeing it, but I had no idea it was something that quite possibly dropped my IQ. just something about the first line from Al Gore being "Hello, and for those who don't know who i am; I am the former President elect of the US." and following on that comment, a third of the movie was a montage of the 2000 election and the Supreme Court ruling against Gore. And yes at one point i did ask what that had to do with chemistry or global warming, the teacher did not have a answer. I am starting to see my idea of going through a science class without global warming is a vain hope sadly.
Also I think it goes with out saying, Gore only points out one experiment and not multiple to prove his theory of the US killing the world.

SCTP Nationals Day 4

Today was the last day of SCTP Nationals 2014. Rio did better then yesterday. Weather at 70 degrees sure beat 100 degree weather in AZ.  It was nice to have better weather then last year with high heat with high humidity. Better luck next year! I would like to thank Mr TrueBlueSam and Mr ILEngineGuy  for making the trip to watch us shoot and showing us the engines!

SCTP Nationals Day 3

Trap events started for Rio today. Weather was pleasant with a fair breeze. Over all every one had at least one off round. Winds at some points blocked out voice pulling. But still beats last year with 100 degree temps with high humidity. Scores averaged out in the seventies. Not our best but we will do better tomorrow ! Today I got my first 25 in competition. Beats the 24 last year. Updates and photos to follow.

Today ended the events for sporting clays at National s today. Rio did better overall then yesterday. Weather was pleasant and much better then being in Arizona. Little wind to mess up the birds and even got a fly over by an F-22 Raptor. After shooting was finished, Rio got to meet and get a picture with Larry & Brenda Potterfield of Midway USA. Really neat! Updates, links and photos to follow.

SCTP Day 1 plus bonus

Today was the start of Sporting Clays And most events of SCTP nationals in Sparta IL. The course lives up to the name of a national competition, I did better than last year. Mr TrueBlueSam and Mr ILEngineGuy
came down to the range and watched us shoot and after we finished shooting Mr ILengineguy took out a few engines to demonstrate for us. (Photos to follow.) It was really cool ! Though I do not believe photos can convey what those kinds of engines are like in real life!

Bleep Bloop

I wasn't planning on posting this but it already has so...
Starting this season my goal as a joke due to a few unfortunate 24 scores including one where i failed to hit the very last bird...Today I guess I finally did it.

With our SCTP club and many others there is a tradition of shooting a shooters hat if they get a perfect 25 on trap. Some hats are reduced to a little bit of the bill and thats it and others are still wearable with minor repair needed. A shot hat is a trophy of bragging rights.

The tiny blob is the hat being thrown in the air with a clay inside. Eight of us were on the firing line and shot at the flying head wear. I missed.

SCTP Western Region Trap

Windy does not even begin to describe the conditions yesterday in Prescott ,not only did it act as a tail wind to push clays down, three porta-podies toppled over due to the wind*. The main problem with the wind and the Rio team was when it wasn't there, the clays just about hit escape velocity. Rio's older team had a average of 21, doing well until what felt like a wall of wind hit us and gave the clays god-mode. Our final score was 422, landing us in 4th place. Rio's younger team took first in their class,

Updates to follow on Sporting Clays in Flagstaff later.

*no one was hurt by the falling porta-podies.

Non-magnified optic sights (e.g. reddot) count as iron sights.  1:1 "RedDot" sights might be slightly faster to align than normal iron sights as there is only one sight to get on target, not two.  But speed is not a factor in this game so it's a wash.  Take your time and make good hits with either system.

NRA Con :Day 3

How to sum it up today, my feet hurt. Today was not as crowded as Friday and most definitely not as crowded as Saturday, which was described as "a zoo" by a Sig Sauer vendor. Today was just covering the area's I didn’t see On Friday.

Found the most confusing looking *thing?* from FNH
Star Wars anyone?
The Worker claimed on Friday it was the same angle as the other revolvers.

Shooter Self Care Class

As Mr Grayson put it, "They came, They saw, They puked" summed the class up. The cause for the class is You and your buddy are out shooting and you/your buddy got shot or go into cardiac arrest, what do you do.

The class was very informative, it taught how to do chest compressions, apply a tourniquet and how to recognise certain wounds (sucking chest wound, arterial bleed.)

Tourniquet on the arm= numb arm

Though no one did puke, Alot were close when the Eye injury portion of class came. I personally had to hide under a hat while the Ambulance Driver talked about what to do in a eye injury.
Hats, Better doors than windows.
Over all the class was worth it. It showed how to deal with some common shooting accidents like shooting your foot or turning a hand gun into a grenade, and we all got a range first aid kit to put in our range bags.

Worth it.

NRA Con :Day 1

will be posting from press hall.
cant wait.

Internet in the press area failed so i was unable to update from the event,

today was just busy, from the start people packed the convention hall.
saw a lot of guns today, everything from FN's AR-15's

to a World War I era M1903

First Car??
Why have one gold gun when you can have two?
The vendor was very adamant that a square looking gun was far superior then a regular revolver.

Today I also met retired Senator Rick Santorum and got a book signed by him,
And met Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North And Sergeant First Class Sammy Davis.

Today was a good day.

ended up on the local news.

Today was a tourist day, Mom having family there stayed while Dad and I went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Today just also happened to be when the tours of the entire race track.

The Entire experiance of the track was really cool, to see the history of all the races that took place there.

Tomorrow is the start of the convention, hope to see alot of cool stuff like In the past.

Because all Theories Are Accepted

Zombie Planes... apparently are being ruled as a possible cause for Flight 370's disappearance.
though further into the story the writer explains that a possible cabin depressurization knocked out or killed the passengers or crew. The one question with this theory in my mind is that if the aircraft depressurized, how come the pilots did not put on the quick donning mask? Its possible if the airplane is found all the questions can/ will be answered,  it could have been a hijacking or pilot caused crash, just to many variables to figure out. Hopefully The plane will turn up somewhere with all crew and passengers alive and well.

As Heard From A Public School Teacher

Forward Note: today in schools as a part of a "common core" type curriculum, Schools are now teaching students the wonders of gun Control. this is a Rough transcript of my English class where such a topic was discussed for a 'Research Essay'.

Teacher:... For a example of a essay you may write, Should the government be making laws to ban Private assault gun ownership.
My Brain (aka Brain) :Well what do you define as a assault gun?
Teacher:in My opinion I think we should Ban the assault guns because people do mass murders with them.
Brain: (cringing) Well people kill people with toasters, what about them.
Teacher: Well to people really need a 20+ fullyautomatic clip to put their shells in.
Brain:(with even more cringing) do you know what any of these words mean? For starters, clips are very small and go into guns with fixed magazines like the SKS,m1903 or Garand; Second, what is a fullyautomatic clip? and third Shells are for shotguns, not rifles and fourth where do any of these things exist?

after a short while the teacher noticed my cringing in my seat listening to things that do not exist or have any relevance to the subject and she went on describing the assignment more. The icing on the cake of fail is the topic is labeled.

"There Should (should not) be federal laws banning private ownership of assault style guns and / or magazine clips that hold 10 or more cartridges/bullets."

I personally got a giggle out of the "magazine clip" line, this right here goes to show that the people trying to explain how evil and sadistic guns are, really dont understand what half of the things their demonizing are.

And to make things better here is a video of a California Senator doing the same thing.
