365 (ish) Days and Three Shotguns Later...

Tonight was the first shoot for the SCTP Target Terminators out of Rio Salado and the start of my second year with the program. My last year with the program was extremely fun, from starting off with absolutely no idea what a choke tube* is or the difference between a 12 and 20 gauge** to shooting in the state Commissioners Cup for Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays to as of this past July going to Sparta Illinois to the SCTP Nationals for Trap and Sporting Clays.

Tonight wasn't terribly busy. I was able to see two of my team who went and shot at Sparta. On both rounds I got 21/25 birds.*** Not exactly a best but not my worst either.

Target Terminators is having another shotgun Raffle,  Like last year you have a chance to win a Winchester SX3 Sporting 12 Gauge Shotgun. tickets still $5. or 5 for $20

*Choke Tube : a tube that goes on the end of the inside of the barrel to determine the shot pattern.
** Different size of rounds for shotguns. 12 being larger and 20 ga. smaller and yellow.
Left: 410 caliber. Middle: 20 Gauge. Right: 12 Guage
 *** Birds: Clay targets.

Friends of NRA Ben Avery Fun Shoot.

Today was the "Friends of NRA 100 Big Bangs For Freedom" fun shoot out at the Ben Avery Clay Target Center. The course was much like it was In Sparta, I giant mile-long loop with 15 shooting stages around it.
The shooting stages on the course varied from beginners targets to scenarios that closely  resembled what was in the SCTP Nationals. It was by no means easy, but that's what makes competitions like this fun, because you can never tell what kind of targets you might be shooting.

By the end of the day I had beat dad, I hit 66 targets while he got 60. I cant really say much since he beats me usually by two targets anytime we shoot at Rio Salado.

Post Title

A few Days ago one of mom's friends called up with a issue. Her dad recently passed leaving Her his guns & ammo and she just wanted to make sure the firearms were safe to use. So today she dropped by with the guns and ammo and the first thing dad notices with the ammo was it was A: $8.90 for 500 rounds and B: from Smittys (Arizona walmart-ish store that went defunct in the 90's)

And the two firearms She had acquired are two, in my personal opinion classic firearms, a .22lr Ruger Single Six and a .410 cal Mossberg 500,

Both firearms on closer examination by Dad show probably little to no use, (somethings wrong with that...)

Also , She asked alot of good questions on where to buy guns, reputable FFL's and guns-smiths along with many many other questions. and hopefully we might see her out at the range soon.

SCTP Nationals :Day 4

Yesterday was the second round and final Day of SCTP Nationals In Sparta Il.

On Trap We did a lot better after our first round. The weather actually was not that bad, not much wind to affect the Clays.

SCTP Nationals:Day 3

Today was the first 4 rounds in trap for SCTP  Nationals in Sparta Illinois. Wind today varied, at some points helping keep the birds aloft and at other times making the orange clays almost impossible to hit. The Teams score improved with each round. It didnt help that on our first 50 shots the clay throwers threw Birds in unexpected directions. Our last round was the best with me personally missing one target. Tomorrow is the last day and I expect that we will to 100,000,000 times better!

SCTP Nationals :Day 1

Today was the first day of SCTP Nationals, and for The team From Rio Salado, we started with the first day of Sporting Clays. All I can say about The Sporting Clays facility here , I see why its a world class range, there were some difficult targets to say the least.

Today also, Me and Dad met with Mr.True Blue Sam who gave our group some Sprays to help keep the chiggers and other bugs away and also walked with our group.
Thankfully the temperature and  humidity made it feel closer to Arizona Temps.

On a side note, after Our team Finished shooting we all drove to the main building to use up the precious A/C and we got to meet and Take a picture with the Potterfields of Midway USA. That was a pretty cool experience.

Also, When dad and I were walking around looking at random vendor stores, we found pallets of ammo.
where do you go to buy this????

SCTP Nationals :Day 0

Today was mostly travel to Illinois. Thankfully the two teammates who were marooned in New Mexico where able to get a new vehicle and should arrive tonight, so no need for Fed-ex.
The TSA line was  bearable, We weren't pulled to the side for a "Random Screening" so they Must have hit there quota. The attendant at The airline front desk was a complete idiot offering no help but a lot of attitude. the flight itself was not bad besides for random patches of turbulence.

Since the TSA will not allow snacks and water Dad and I Went to A Illinois Wal-mart, and due to the fact this is a very gun unfriendly area I was surprised By two out of three things. First surprise was that the Wal-mart Carried ammo, My second surprise was the fact the ammo had the same price as Arizona. The only non surprise was the fact that The only ammo they had were Shotgun shells or lesser used rounds.

Tomorrow is the first day of Nationals, My team is starting with Sporting Clays, Should be fun!

Good For Ohio.

Ohio school district allows staff to carry fire-arms on school grounds.

Good for Ohio, because as was said in the article

“With a single exception, every multiple-victim public shooting in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed since at least 1950 has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry their own firearms.”

Personally I would feel much safer going to a school where there is more then one police officer with a firearm. With more staff carrying, a threat In a larger school can be handled in less amount of time then it would take the police or security to respond.

uh oh....

As some might know, this week is the last week of the SCTP season which will end with the National Competition in Sparta IL. And the 5 member team at Rio Salado will be Heading out to compete. yay us. And Two teammates who are driving, With all our guns & enough ammo to hold off the living dead for some time. had there Car break down in the middle of Nowhere New Mexico. So since me and Dad are flying out tomorrow. It Should be a fun rest of the Week. Wednesday-Thursday is shooting Sporting Clays in Sparta and Friday-Saturday is Trap.

The Sparta Trap/Skeet & Sporting Clays Range 2 miles of Trap,
another mile of skeet and two 1 Mile loops of Sporting Clays.

5.2 Seconds...

Around January, the Local Range had there annual dinner, where in the cost to enter was a raffle ticket, and there where various prizes. Ammo, knives that sort of stuff, and a certificate for a Belt Fed Machine gun Match. You can probably see where this is going to.

well about two weeks ago I called and verified my entry for this months Match. and he told me and Dad what was going to happen. and said something along the Lines of "Oh Yeah, You'll be shooting a MG-42". Mind Explosion.

And Yesterday was the day of the match.  When the family arrived to the High-Power Range, he showed me the basics of the weapon. How to load, clear and move the gun. then he showed me how the Gun worked on a tri-pod and He let me sight in the MG.

The Match Was shot in 'short controlled burst'. so it wasn't entirely 5.2 Seconds, most of the match Was hitting a 1X1 orange plate at 100+ yards.

It was A Really epic experience. It was my first time ever shooting a belt fed and is was really cool to be in the presence of such a historic weapon.

You can Download the Target here
You Can Download and Print The Score Sheet here

There Is a 20 Shot Limit.

Pistols: 25ft/10 yds or range minimum which ever is greater.  Standing unsupported, one or two hands. No time limit.

Rifles may be shot any position including off the bench, but rests such as sandbags and bi-pods are disallowed.  The fore end of the rifle must be supported by the offhand elbow.   No time limit.

  • Rimfire, both iron sights and scope: 25 yards.
  • Centerfire iron sight & scope: 50 yards
Classes:  shoot anything you want and we'll find a place to record the score. (I reserve the right to draw the line at RPGs Or BFG 9000).

  1. .177 cal air pistol, iron sights (air or C02 powered)
  2. .177 cal air pistol, optic sights (air or C02 powered)
  3. .17/.22 cal rim fire pistol, iron sights
  4. .17/.22 cal rim fire pistol, magnified optical sights
  5. center fire pistol, iron sights
  6. center fire pistol, magnified optic sights
  7. .17/.22 cal rim fire rifle iron sights (25 yds)
  8. .17/.22 cal rim fire rifle magnified optic sights (25 yds)
  9. center fire rifle iron sights (50 yds)
  10. center fire rifle magnified optic sights (50 yds)
  11. other (anything that doesn't fit the above categories)
Non-magnified optic sights (e.g. reddot) count as iron sights.  1:1 "RedDot" sights might be slightly faster to align than normal iron sights as there is only one sight to get on target, not two.  But speed is not a factor in this game so it's a wash.  Take your time and make good hits with either system.

You can Submit Scores to me at

*Note: This Target is not affiliated With ID Software or the 'Doom' Franchise

I was notified that the link to the target was down. I think that is fixed. if it still is a problem you can E-mail me at   Smallestconservative-at-hotmail-dot-com and I can e-mail the PDF of the target back to you.

NRA Convention day 3

Reporting live (again) In the press room at the 142nd annual NRA Convention.

today is not as crowded as yesterday or friday, Yet it is still very busy.
so far of what me and the family as seen was a free mini concert infront of the FN booth that the crowedsoon invaded two other booths for. (pics to follow). Red Jacket Firearms(as seen on TV) FN,

Updates soon to follow

Got a Few good Pics from this years convention,

We found a Bus With a Minigun.
Hippies Worst Nightmare.
 And Mini -Guns
Bad joke I know..

Also found a three barreled shotgun,

The Breech

I believe it was a Chippa Firearms Triple Crown 12 Ga.  I thought it was interesting that it weighed no more than most of the Over-Unders on the floor. Im still Questioning If the shotgun can be used for Sporting Clays or Skeet.

As I said before, FN Herstal hosted a mini-concert with  Mark Wills where Played two songs, "19 something" and "Looking For America" then gave away a 9mm handgun  and signed copies of his new album.

And While there I of course had to drool on the SCAR's , P90's and Fn2000.
War-Face. PNG

DPMS Brought a trailer of AR-15s

And I again found a AR with a cross-bow attachment,

And two odd colored

and a Saiga -12

To end this Post, I give you a panorama view Houston from outside the press room.

It was a good convention this year. Texas was fun.
See you all for Indy 2014 next Year!
